Ba Be is a mountainous district of Bac Kan Province in the northeast region of Vietnam. It takes about 5-6 hours drive to get to Ba Be from Hanoi.

Ba Be district covers an area of 678 km². It is divided into 1 township and 15 communes including Cho Ra, My Phuong, Dong Phuc, Hoang Tri, Quang Khe, Yen Duong, Chu Huong, Dia Linh, Thuong Giao, Khang Ninh, Nam Mau, Cao Thuong, Cao Tri, Phuc Loc, Banh Trach, and Ha Hieu.

The most important travel highlight of Ba Be district is the Ba Be lake is also part of the Ba Be national park. The lake is located in Nam Mau commune, and is the largest natural lake in Vietnam.

Having been formed approximately 200 million years ago, the lake is surrounded by limestone cliffs, which in turn are covered by primary forests. The lake comprises three zones named Pe Lam, Pe Lu, and Pe Leng. Three rivers, named Nang, Ta Han, and Nam Cuong, are the main inflows of the lake. The Nang river enters the lake through a large waterfall called Dau Dang. In the lake there are also three islands, named An Ma, Khau Cum, and Po Gia Mai (literally “Widow’s Island”).

Getting to Ba Be Bac Kan

There is neither train nor plane from Hanoi to Ba Be. The best way to get to Ba Be from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up in Hanoi and brought to Ba Be Vietnam. Those who are on budget can take public bus. There are direct buses from My Dinh bus station to Ba Be. Booking a guided tour (with a tour guide) is highly recommended. An English-speaking guide is helpful in such off the beaten path place like Ba Be Vietnam.

The climatic condition of Ba Be city is typically tropical monsoonal, which exhibits two distinct seasons.
